Life with a smart home assistant - How to increase longterm engagement with IoT products
How does a good relationship with a digital product look like? How can a product be included into a user’s daily life over the span of serval years without intruding? With IoT products becoming more service centered creating a sustainable interaction with the user is a significant challenge for design, since revenues are depending on users drawing continuous value from a service instead of just an initial purchase. This thesis was created in collaboration with the Munich based smart home start-up Tado°. It explores how to encourage engagement throughout the user journey on the example of an indoor climate assistant. The assistant supports users with correct ventilation and heating behavior to create a healthier, more comfortable and energy efficient home. An app concept and a concept for a physical visualization were created through an iterative, human-centered design process.
