Communication is essential for human interaction; it also reassures personal identity. However customs and rules differ from culture to culture. In need for shelter, refugees from all parts of the world arrive in German reception centres. Which expectations do these institutions have to meet? Expectations of the society, expectations of the attending staff and expectations of the young people who want to gain a foothold in the new country. In collaboration with ZufluchtsRaum [shelter], a facility for unaccompanied refugee minors administered by Innere Mission, I created a guidebook based on graphic representations. Omitting language, this manual is to familiarize novices with “their new home” and to help them orient. What is where, and who does what. It is a basic instruction for organizing everyday life and an incentive to start communicating in an unfamiliar environment.
