The Line of Mistrust
Especially in times of war, trust and distrust sometimes go side by side. Shortly before the beginning of World War Two, Mussolini had secretly set up a belt of defence along the alpine border. One essential feature of this bunker system was a carefully planned camouflage to embed it unnoticeably into the landscape. With the final abandonment of the sites in 1992, the constructions became a redundant staffage within an idyllic mountain scenery. Due to their camouflage, they were mainly discovered by people interested in history. The bunker architecture applied the principle of mimicry in order to adapt the camouflage to the seasonal changes of colours and shades. This work is a research of this phenomenon as well as of the perception of the viewer through photographs and subsequently developed colour gradients.
